The sugar industry in the Dominican Republic'is in many ways characteristic of the Caribbean region but is unusual because a state agency, a. local private group, and a multinational corporation own most of the sugarcane fields and all of the processing facilities. The typically Caribbean colono system is widespread in the republic. The importance of the sugar industry and geographical relationships among various sugar producers are analyzed. The modern sugar plantation is assessed as a means for future economic development in the Caribbean region.
