Description :
This paper is a detailed critical review of previous studies on the subject. The main conclusion reached is that the techniques applied have been too imprecise and subjective and that a lack of relevant data of all types inhibits the development of a more detailed knowledge of events. Only in postglacial times some basic patterns in Quaternary environmental development have been established. (P. A. Pirazzoli).
