Description :
This article is written in relation to the publication of the archeological-geological map of The Hague. It deals with the sedimentology of Holocene coastal deposits which were exposed in five construction pits. Based on C 14 dating and on published pollen data, the oldest preserved coastal ridge (Rijswijk ridge) was formed between approximately 5000 and 4750 BP. The Hague ridge dates from between approximately 4560 and 4250 BP. A discussion is devoted to the relation between sedimentation and sea-level rise. For the first time the occurence of hummocky stratification and a debris-flow channel-fill are reported from a beach-ridge sequence in the Netherlands.
