The Central Yakutian lowlands: land of climatic extremes, permafrost and alas depressions

Auteur :
KOUTANIEMI, L.

Description :
The extreme nature of the climate in Central Yakutia is revealed above all by the low winter temperatures accompanied by highly arid conditions, both of these circumstances being due to the Siberian high pressure system, the shelter afforded by the mountains and the great distances from any source of air humidity. Localized thawing of the permafrost gives rise to a characteristic alas relief. The most active period of alas formation would appear to have been the Atlantic climatic optimum, while nowadays such landforms are becoming increasingly a mark of imbalances in nature brought about by human activity.-(L'Ed.).
