Critical analysis and evaluation of the informal sector concept of the International Labour Office, based on detailed research on tourism in Thailand. The case studies of informal activities (small pensions and restaurants, mobile food stalls, handicraft production and trade, prostitution, rental of small boats, etc.) suggest that they are prospering only as long as they don't conflict with local economic and/or political powers. Therefore, more small scale geographical studies seem necessary for the evaluation of new strategies of development. (EG).
