Lake Rimigliano, located on the coastal plain of Tuscany was dried out in the first half of the 20th century. The paper presents the unpublished description of the old lake given by Paolo Savi. A recent geological and morphological study of the lake has led to hypotheses that differ from earlier accounts: Lake Rimigliano acted as a coastal barrier lake only along its lower transverse stretch, near the sea. The entire length was filled during the rise in sea-level that followed on the last period of glaciation.
