Vegetation structure and the regeneration of short-lived forbs in chalk grasslands in La végétation des pelouses calcaires.

Field measurements and experiments in the laboratory show that light quality (R/FR) and light quantity (PAR) restrict the occurrence of open site-species in dense turf, whereas water-regime probably restricts the occurrence of dense turf-species in open sites. Apparently variation in the vegetation structure is necessary for the maintenance of short-lived forbs in chalk grassland. The productivity must not exceed 600-700 g.m yr, preferably less than 400 g.m yr. Finally, the proper management is discussed.
