The process of reduction in the labour force has been the only way in which the per capita income of those engaged in agriculture could have been increased to any significant degree and contact with other sectors of the economy more or less maintained. This process will have to continue in future, at least within limits, if a drastic drop in farming incomes is to be avoided.
