This study compares the changes in elevation of Late Holocene shorelines from Tahiti to Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Maupiti. A progressive decrease of a few decimeters of the emergence is observed from Maupiti to Tahiti. The direction of increasing emergence is contrary to the predictions of global isostatic models. This is ascribed to an active flexuring of the lithosphere resulting from the load of the most recent volcanic islands.
