Agglomeration regions in the GDR have often been investigated and described as a specific type of regions under geographical aspects. This contribution aims at the description of additional main features of the spatial structure of agglomeration regions as well as of the tendencies of their development. It refers especially to the industrial structure and the structure of population in the agglomeration regions Halle-Leipzig, Karl-Marx-Stadt-Zwickau and Dresden. The paper presents causes for the regional differences of the general conditions and possibilities of development both within and between the investigated agglomeration regions. (HL).
