Regional study of city development.

From a discussion of the close relationship between a city and its functional region, illustrated with Chinese cities of different hierarchies, the author proceeds to examine the rationale for promoting the development of cities in step with development in the resource potentials of the city region, with territorial division of labour, and with demographic development within the region. Multi-centred cities have more rational structure than uni-centred cities provided that basic infrastructural provision is in line with the rate of city growth. (TNC).
