Several approaches to economic regionalization are outlined: by economic activity groups, by purpose of the regionalization, or by temporal differentiation. The characteristics of economic regions are objective, spatial, comprehensive, and hierarchical. Regionalization work should take into account territorial division of labour, balance, centre orientation, accordance with administrative units, and future directions of development. Further work needs to learn from the experience of the Changjiang delta Economic Region, the North-east Economic Region, and the Chongqing test region for economic restructuring. (TNC).
