Dendrochronology, which studies tree rings for various purposes, has undergone rapid development in the past two decades. This may be attributed to the emergence of high-speed computers and the increase in interdisciplinary and international cooperation. Dendrochronological research has expanded its geographical coverage, widened its scope and refined its approaches. This article attempts to introduce the fundamentals of this burgeoning science, dealing with a wide range of methods and applications. The examples are mainly based on data collected by the author in the United States.
