The unpredictability of highly erratic runoff and streamborne sediment loads in the semi-arid Ecca Catchment (South Africa) makes low frequency sampling meaningless. The paper provides a brief description of a continuously recording turbidity meter which has been installed to overcome some of the difficulties of sediment sampling in this area. (AJC).
