There is considerable controversy and confusion concerning Marx's theory of rent and its transposition to the analysis of urban land rent. This article contains a discussion of some aspects of this transposition and concludes that it is a theoretical failure. We propose to substitute for the mechanistic application of Marx's categories of rent an enlarged discussion of the nature of landed property in a capitalistic social formation and of the nature of Marx's method.
