The paper studies the changes in the structure and destination of Finland's visible exports. Export data are given in the form of annual means for the three-year periods 1957-1959, 1969-1971 and 1979-1981. Finland's foreign trade is clearly divided into bilateral trade with the eastern bloc and free trade with the western industrialised countries. As far as new export products are concerned Sweden and the Soviet Union are important customers. The structure of Finland's exports has become much more diverse but the direction of the export trade remains much the same as twenty five years ago. The four largest markets for Finland's goods have accounted for 55 per cent of the total over the whole period. Finland's exports are directed principally towards the industrialised and newly developed countries, i.e. the core areas and growth centres in the world economy. Finland's position between East and West in a politically and economically divided Europe is portrayed in a model based on the country's geographical situation.
