The low precipitation in the area meant that the ice of the Pleistocene glaciations never reached the low-lying terrain, and this together with still more severe conditions than at present led to the formation of permafrost, its preservation having been favoured by subsequent climatic conditions. The most pronounced Holocene changes in the relief have occurred in the lowlying areas, where thermokarst features account for almost a half of the relief. The exceptionally favourable conditions for such processes are due principally to the geological history of the region and the intensive formation of ice-wedges due to the severity of the climate. The thermokarst features, mainly in the form of alas depressions, are largely the result of climatic changes, especially at the Atlantic optimum, frequent forest fires and human activity over recent decades.
