About 61.5 % of the area in the region where agriculture and animal grazing are interspersed suffers from varying degrees of desertification. It has increased by 3.4 million hectare in the last 30 years. Overcultivation, overgrazing and firewood collection are the main causes, while mining, construction of all kinds, destruction of vegetation by mismanagement of water resources contribute to the same process. Remedial measures are suggested for rejuvenating the ecosystem. (TNC).
