A model is applied to explain the early stages of exploration from the Dutch settlement at the Cape towards the north. Exploration was mainly undertaken to comply with commercial demand factors. Although the original demands remained unsatisfied, new demand factors arose which led to more realistic reassessment of the area. (AJC).
