After a brief review of the concept of biogeography, the authors deal at length with the problem of levels of perception and examine the general relations between area and species richness by means of a great number of data from sample spots in a forest environment until the whole avifaunas of continental land masses. In the second part of the paper, the distribution of bird communities is discussed from a methodological and ecological point of view. An area of 1 710 km was chosen in a semi-mountainous landscape of southern France. In this area, 26 biotopes were defined. The questions to be answered were: what is the accuracy of the observed species richness at both levels of perception: that of each biotope in particular and that of the 26 biotopes pooled together (= ecological sector).
