The author examines the problems of the evolution of valley slopes in Rwanda, a mountainous country with heavy rainfall, where a population growth which is exceptional for Africa has brought about particularly intense agricultural development. After examination of the principal factors which explain the appearance of the valley slopes, the author tries to show by a typology how the farmers take advantage of the environmentals. Favourable natural conditions and well-adapted agricultural systems bring remarkable stability to the slopes.
