A comparative study of Middle Pleistocene assemblages in France shows that the hypothesis of cultural variability is unsupported. The pattern of variation is strongly dependent on the use of different raw materials. Différences in collecting procedures and an exclusively typological approach to the study of stone artifacts have also contributed to create an illusony pattern of geographic differentiation.
