On the basis of medium-scale agricultural mapping six site groups are differentiated for GDR grassland. These are low-bog sites, Pleistocene sandy sites, Pleistocene loam and clay sites, bottomland sites, loess sites, and alpine sites. Altogether 57 pedological grassland types have been classified in subgroups and described according to parameters for land unit regional types and the area covered. Decisive aspects are almost equal and stable site characteristics, such as soil conditions, essential water regime, relief, stone content and heterogeneity of the soil covering. (HL).
