Some geographical implications of the restructuring of the iron ore industry: 1950-1980

Auteur :
BRADBURY, J.

Description :
In the post 1950 period there was a significant regional restructuring of the international iron ore industry. Major steel firms moved to capture regions either in vertically integrated corporate structures or through long-term contract and pricing arrangements. The geographical significance of this restructuring is discussed in terms of moves of major iron and steel firms within developed and developing countries. It is concluded that major restructuring and relocations took place because of declines in high grade ore reserves, the discovery of new reserves in developing countries, and the development of new industrial technologies such as pelletization.
