During the last twenty years to the south of Lake Okeechobee a new American agricultural frontier has been developed: the Everglades. 120,000 hectares of rich, organic land have been planted with sugar cane by a handful of large companies (Gulf + Western, USSC...) which have monopolised this space valorized by large improvement projects financed by public funds. At the time of the Cuban crisis in 1960 their control of the sugar lobby allowed them to recuperate to their advantage considerable plantation rights which make Florida today the largest American cane sugar producing state.
