Crustal dynamics and morphodynamics of the Western European Rift system

Description :
As the result of fluctuating stress regimes in the Alpine collision zone, the individuale rift segments in the foreland had changed their tectonic activity and function during geologic time. Present day rifting in the Rhinegraben is that of the sinistral shear. In the Lower Rhine embayment extensional rifting occurs, whereas the intermediate block of the Rhenish shield had reacted by contemporaneous plateau uplift. A parallel but failed arm of Quaternary rifting is observed in the system of the Leine graben. The morphodynamic implications of the extinct and active rifting are depicted.
