Criticism of Physiographical Unit concept used hitherto has led the proposal of a new, lateral classification of the coast on the basis of morphodynamic aspects. This involves differentiation between physiographical units and balancing systems. This contribution also deals especially with the role physiographical bounds and separating zones between balancing systems, certain types being explained by means of natural examples. (HL).
