Dynamique d'une forêt équatoriale africaine: mesures en temps réel et comparaison du potentiel de croissance des différentes espèces

The dynamics of a rain forest has been studied during seven years at the field station of M'passa (near Makokou, North-East Gabon), by measuring tree growth, tree death, and the occurrence of new individuals (in the smallest girth class) in two plots of respectively 4 000 m (297 trees over 5 cm in diameter) and 9 000 m (93 trees over 30 cm). During this period (1972-1979), the death of trees in the different classes accounted for a decrease of 1/10 of the total basal area, while the cumulative simultaneous increase was of the same order of magnitude. A comparison of the growth patterns of different species showed that, among an overall specific response to the environmental conditions, individual responses can vary to a large extent and reflect the highly heterogeneous conditions of the rain forest mosaic. Data from other rain forest ecosystems allows a comparative analysis of the model of dynamic equilibrium in a mature rain forest.
