Critical review on types of rural space, based on French written publications since 1965. The A. identifies two countervailing tendencies between those who refuse any strict identification, classification or subdivision at all, and those who propose various distinct typologies. Principal distinctions between these approaches can be made on the basis of vocabulary and ways of concept definition, criteria used. One major problem remains un resolved today: that of articulating results in a manner which connects local and global levels of analysis, ant that of relating theoretical approaches on the one hand to functionnal and morphological approaches on the other.
