The mammalian fauna of the lower Couze Pavin and Chambon rivers are the classical references for biostratigraphic scale of the Villafranchian and post-Villafranchian times in the Southern France. A stratigraphic revision of volcanic episodes and alluvial deposits at Perrier Plateau and surroundings is presented correlatively with new K/Ar measurements. Precisions are given concerning faunas from Roca Neyra and Pardines (< 2.4 My), and from Champeix ( 0.8 My). These new data allow to point out the fauna from Perrier-Etonaires at 2.6-2.5 My. This questions the lower limit of villafranchian stage.
