This genetic classification of climates in Chile is based on a spatial cross-interaction of primary and secondary climatic influences, e. g. those of cosmic order (latitude), those emanating from atmospheric and oceanic processes in the Southeast Pacific zone, and major topographic features of the country. Seven major categories of climatic types and subtypes have been defined and tested with multivariate quantitative techniques such as principal components and cluster analysis. This original classification has been verified through analysis of records from 33 stations throughout Chile.
