Description :
The Malawi Rift is one of the youngest sections of the African Rift Valley System. The initial rift fill comprises fossiliferous Pliocene sediments. Early sediments in the extreme north were conformably overlain by pyroclastics erupted from the Rungwe volcanic field. A major phase of faulting then initiated a prolonged period of erosion and possible Early Stone Age artefacts are found on the resulting gravels at the foot of the western escarpment. Middle Stone Age artefacts are most abundant nearer to the modern lake. A large pyroclastic flow swept into northern Malawi from the Rungwe area just over 11 000 300 yr BP. An ash layer in the sediments flooring Lake Tanganyika, dated at 11 690 300 yr BP, may be the air-fall equivalent of the same eruptive phase.
