Description :
In England there is no real counterpart to the French Industrial Revolution. This term will very likely continue to be used in the future although it is lacking a satisfactory definition. A small population and a national economy under constant pressure of growth made the England of the 17th and 18th centuries demonstrate the capacities of her early capitalist economic and social orders in contrast to France. This structure enabled England to enjoy an evolutionary development from early to high capitalism which had to be initiated by force as an abrupt break on the continent. As to the time of these events we may adopt the so-called take-off of about 1780 from the macro-economic concept while taking into consideration that the industrialization process gained full momentum only during the second quarter of the 19th century. The example of the village of Newbottle on the rim of the East Durham Plateau is discussed in detail.
