Automorphic saline soils in Israel in Aridic soils and geomorphic processes.

Description :
All soils in the desertic regions of Israel, south of the 220 mm precipitation isohyet, are saline and gypsiferous. There is a good correlation betweeen salt distribution and the stability and age of the pedomorphic surfaces, which supports the conclusion that the major sources of the salts are airborne ones blown in over a long period of time. Detailed salt profile data of six characteristic stable soils of the desert and desert fringe areas indicate that salinity increases with aridity. Depth to the gypsic horizon is related to the depth of moisture penetration in wetter years. The profile distribution of the more soluble chloride salts reflects more closely the recent moisture regime.
