Approach to define the origin and mineralization of thermal waters base on new data concerning spring waters from southern France (Massif Central and Alps) and from Iran (eastern Azerbaijan). The behaviour of minor elements and the significance of characteristic ratios between minor and major water constituents enable us to distinguish between mineral and thermal waters associated with granitic, metamorphic or volcanic rocks and these originating from sedimentary evaporites. Trace-element distribution seems to be controlled by magmatic influences as well as by the effect of temperature on groundwaters.
