The newly introduced concept, especially for administrative purposes, of increases in river temperatures (excess) due to thermal discharges, has produced a need for convenient computation methods. The method presented here computes the river mean excess temperature with a daily time-step for several checking stations. The only data used are the values of thermal loadings river flow rate, water temperature and wind speed. This method has been used to design a management model for a set of thermal power stations, cooled by a river which is subject to an excess temperature standard. Application to the Rhine River.
