After monthly and zonally averaged climatic data fields are represented by Legendre polynomials in latitude and Fourier series in time, it is seen that only a few terms are necessary to describe the gross features of the seasonal oscillation. A sequence of simple energy-balance models is constructed which illustrates the magnitude and importance of various feedback mechanisms. The sensitivity of the seasonal models is then compared to that of the corresponding mean annual models.
