Description :
Short-period climate fluctuations arise from statistical sampling fluctuations of random weather and from physical forcing by external influences. The first mechanism produces a climate noise that obscures the potentially predictable signals arising from the second mechanism. Estimates of the response of the system to forcing are made with general circulation models or, through the fluctuation dissipation relation, from observed correlation properties. The possible existence of relatively stable internal dynamical states of the system must also be considered.
