Long-term extreme rainfalls and their role in the modelling of flysch slopes

Description :
In the surroundings of the research Station of the Institute of Geography, Polish Academy of Science at Szymbark near Gorlice the investigations were made in 1974. The investigations concerned the rates of overland flow, subsurface run-off and slope wash as well as landslide movements. In 1974 the annual precipitation was very high (1174mm) with maximum in May (136mm), in June (225mm) and from September till December (X-197,3mm). The main rainfall intensities varied from 0,01mm till 0,04mm. The total of 20 rainfalls altained 459mm with each durations exceeding above 10 hours. The overland flow and the slope wash were lower than average. The subsurface run-off in layer of soil 1 meter deep was high. The subsurface run-off some times reached 1000-5000 1/hr ha. The study area was many times endangered by landslifing. 1974 can be considered as an extreme year. However, it was not the only year during which new large landslides were created as in 1913.
