The future of the UNRISD programme on regional development

Auteur :
HILHORST, J. G. de

Description :
The paper suggests a number of topics for research to be carried out in the framework of the research programme for regional development of the U.N. Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in Geneva. These topics are concerned with the effects of national policies on regional development, the problems of the informal sector in metropolitan areas, the conditions for effective decentralization, the industrialization of lagging regions, rural regional development and the possible importance of voluntary agencies for certain types of development. As such, the concern is largely with a number of problems of the Third World. The position that is implicitly taken in the paper is that the trends towards centralization in both public and private spheres are contrary to the objectives of regional development.
