On theorizing frontier underdevelopment

Auteur :
CRUSH, J. S.

Description :
Arguing the necessity to theorize the phenomenon of differential development, the developmentalist thesis of the spatial diffusion of capital and the Frankian development of ultra-underdevelopment thesis are examined and found to exhibit fundamental theoretical inadequacies. A third alternative is presented, based upon the work of the emergent modes of production school of historiography. It is argued that this perspective provides a potential means for the resolution of some of the theoretical difficulties posed by an uncritical adoption of the worldsystems perspective and hence demands serious consideration from geographers.
