Description :
The protection and conservation of endangered species can no longer be achieved by mere care for individuals or by maintaining local population stock. Measures of such kind should be complented or even replaced by adequate habitat protection. Prerequisite to such practice is the knowledge of all essential habitat relations and of habitat structures to which the individual species is tied by these relations. In many regions, composition and appearance of the landscapes are being established now for the centuries to come. This demands thorough investigations of specific habitat selection and the careful consideration of synecological aspects such as causal chains (concerning food, nesting cavities a.s.o.) and the stability of communities.
