Preference structures and consumer spatial indifference behaviour: some theoretical problems

Auteurs :
HUBBARD, R.
THOMPSON, F. Jr

Description :
The present paper demonstrates that spatial and aspatial interpretations of consumer indifference behaviour, a feature considered by Rushton, are occasionally at variance with one another. More explicitly, the preference structures inherent in the nearest centre postulate of central place theory and the traditional gravity model are shown to generate trivial solutions to the consumer's locational choice problem. When carried to their logical conclusions, these spatial models are rendered essentially spaceless.
