Aspects of the spatial impact of development efforts: a case study of Nigeria

Two ideas are current in the literature, polarization is characteristic of an early stage in national development and tends to diminish later, and urban size is important in the adoption of entrepreneurial innovations. The analysis reveals the occurrence of spatial polarization in development. However, the current trend has been toward an intensification of the pattern. Urban size is found not to be of very great importance in the spatial pattern discussed in the present study. Nearness to a developed centre located on or near the coast appears more important in explaining the diffusion of innovations. Other factors include government industrialization bias in favour of import substitution and the valorization of exports. Policy suggestions are made, aimed at reducing the current intensification of polarized development.
