The article deals with the logic in the evolution of the pattern of urban settlements in Flanders since 1830. The evolution is explained by the fact that in order to exist and expand capitalism needs central places serving a hinterland, whereby 1) the number of central places is kept to a minimum, and 2) the formation of the network of such places succeeds in the steering centre, but encounters difficulties in the peripheral areas.
