Universität und Stadt. Ein stadt-, wirtschafts-und sozialgeographischer Vergleich alter und neuer Hochschulstandorte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.. (University and urban development: A comparative study in the urban, economic and social geography of old and new university towns in the Federal Republic of Germany)

Auteur :
MAYR, A.

Description :
The study deals with the manifold interrelations between university and urban development. Partly on the basis of six examples, partly on the basis of all university towns in the Federal Republic, it analyses the various impacts of universities on the development and structure of their towns and regions. Finally a classification of the university towns of the FRG is given and criteria for additional locations of further institutions of higher education and future development measures are discussed The analysis shows that universities, and in particular those with a wide spectrum of subjects, are important factors for the development of their towns and the whole region. It has become obvious that universities with their cultural, social and economic potential can strongly influence the urban and regional development. This applies not only to new universities but also to the expansion of institutions of higher education in old university towns.
