African socialism and urban development: the relocation of the Tanzanian capital

Auteur :
HOYLE, B. S.

Description :
The decision to move the capital of Tanzania from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma during the period 1973-83 is a bold experiment in the context of African socialism. The arguments in favour of a central, rather than a peripheral, capital have been discussed for many years| the move is being made within the context of the spatial reordering of Tanzanian economy and society. The historical origins and social context of the move are described, and the progress of the new city is analysed. (AGD).
