It is generally assumed that soil erosion is not a problem in England. It can be shown theoretically that, on the sandy soils of Bedfordshire, no runoff will occur because of high infiltration rates. In the unlikely event of overland flow taking place, it should not attain sufficient velocity to erode the soil. In spite of the theory, erosion by overland flow and rill wash occurs once and sometimes more frequently each year. Measurements of erosion since May 1973, using Gerlach troughs, indicate that soil loss from bareground is excessive. On a slope of 11, the mean erosion rate is 17.69t/ha/year. Over 90% of the soil loss takes place by overland flow and 99% has occurred in ten storms. A regression equation with the kinetic energy of runoff and rainfall as dependent variables explains 82% of the variation in soil loss. Of the kinetic energy, 25% of that for runoff and 2% of that for rainfall contribute to erosion. (The A.).
