Description :
The central-peripheric model of landform change derived by Mortensen from studies in the Atacama desert was a major advance for climatic geomorphology as a whole. It is the merit of Meckelein to have pursued and further developed this concept in the central Sahara. Incorporating these efforts toward a classification of desert regions a three-dimensional model for the subdivision of deserts is proposed which tries to link the zonal resp. central-peripheric concept with that of hypsographic.
