Description :
The present volume collects the main points of the scattered information regarding farmers and salaried farm labourers. The information, properly selected and arranged, is analysed both from the structural and evolutionary point of view and compared with other group's available information. At the present time, active agricultural population is an aged population. Agricultural work remains fundamentally family work. Farming on a large scale, with many salaried farm labourers, is exceptional. Remuneration of labour and return on capital remains low in agriculture and is fairly below economic average. Farmers available income, once operating expenditure has been entailed, is more or less similar to that of workers. With regard to living conditions, a great number of indicators assign farmers'place below that of workers. Living conditions as well as food consumption's structure depend on constraints peculiar to farmers (i.e. need to invest, hazards of income, importance of borrowed capital, loneliness, low level of education,...). This first volume deals mainly with average farmers and average farm labourers in the statistical sense of the term| internal disparities will be the object of a second volume.
